Reimagining Urban Spatiality 

Working with the constraints of the Window Box Gallery at Gallery 1313, this project aims to navigate current discussions of — and interventions in, urban space. With the idea of spatial limits in mind, Ella and Cecily ask participating curators/artists to reflect on the following questions:

What are the links between the constraints of urban space and the cultural sector? How can/are emerging curators/artists/practitioners approaching these limits to take up space with intentionality, positionality, and care? How do we re-envision and renegotiate our relationship to the limits of the urban landscape and the cultural landscape? 

Curatorial Opportunity

The Window Box Gallery is a space that facilitates innovative work by emerging and established artists, designers, and curators on projects that go beyond the confines of a physical exhibition space. The Window Box is located outside Gallery 1313’s main entrance in the courtyard of 1313 Queen Street West in Toronto.

Selected applicants will curate a 2 month show in the Window Box Gallery and organize a public program to accompany their show (this can take any form and can include collaborations with other community organizations).

The call for submissions accepts all art forms, but consideration of the unique constraints of the window box space should be considered. The Window Box is west-facing and receives direct sunlight. Heat and light sensitivity should be considered.

Proposals

Proposals should describe in detail the curators concept for their exhibition in the space and a concept for their public programming. Proposals should reference the specific artist that the curator plan to work with as well as the concept of the exhibition and its relation to the overarching curatorial theme. Proposals should be 200 words maximum and should include the time slot that you are applying for (see below for available time slots).
